The Jon Turbeltaub-directed movie Meg has a big shark, and now it has a big star. Jason Statham is in negotiations to star in the adaptation of the novel of the same name that Warner Bros is moving forward with in conjunction with China-based Gravity. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing along with Belle Avery and Colin Wilson.

It’s the first big studio lead in a while for Statham, who has played strong co-starring roles in the Fast & Furious films and also the Melissa McCarthy-starrer Spy, where he reminded us of the comic chops he showed early in those manic Guy Ritchie-directed films Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. He lends a strong global presence as an action star –much the way Dwayne Johnson has done to Fastand other franchises.
